Module Title    DESIGN FOR DIGITAL MEDIA

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

During this module I have gained an understanding of animation, how it works and how to plan for an animation. The workshops at the start of this module introduced me to techniques in working out timing and dealing with many layers and assets which was at first a daunting task.

2. What approaches to methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

Towards the beginning of this module I had the chance to do a workshop in letterpress. I used this opportunity to explore how I could portray a word’s definition and character to try and help me with the brief. Though it was letterpress and we were working digitally, this intial experimentation helped me to develop some ideas that I transferred into my digital work. I haven’t really done much ‘research’ like this before, more collecting of things and after seeing the benefit this experimentation gave me, being more pro-active in my research in other projects is something I would want to incorporate in future briefs.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I spent a fair amount of time in this project researching, working on ideas developing my animation before creating it. This helped me organise and give me direction though it did leave the amount of time for creating my final piece a little short. I should continue to do this thorough research in future briefs but in a shorter period of time.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?

While I was happy with how I developed my idea till production, though I wish I would have left more time at the end till properly polish my animation. If I had left enough time, filming in a studio with proper lighting could have improved the quality of my animation to a more ‘professional’ looking standard.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

Work thoroughly  and for a period of time in the early planning stages so that there is enough time to fully polish an animation.

Try not to overcomplicate and idea. By closing up the shots in my final animation from an earlier storyboard, I removed the need to use a green screen to provide a consistent background behind what I was filming.

song comparisons

after gathering artist and song name’s from the questionnaire i did i decided to start putting this into a table so i could clearly see the information and begin to see if i could notice any correlations.

song comparison

notice any? hard rock and heavy metal from the 70’s & 80’s with an seemingly mandatory solo… could of guessed.

guitar store interviews

after watching the previous video, i thought it would be a good idea to go to some guitar shops myself and ask the employees what experiences they had with people coming in and *trying*to play the guitars. the following images are scans from my notes i took while out and about.

cliche songs (questions) Photobucket cliche songs (music ground) cliche songs (pmt)

while researching for this project, i stumbled across this video by paul barnett, who seems to be somewhat of a video blogger over on youtube. on a similar train of thought to me, he’s actually gone into a guitar store to ask the employees what songs they have banned.

i’m reckoning pachelbel’s ‘canon in d’ is up there for an award too. not that i hate the song - i have just, like many, gone through a period of force over-listening. shame. funny video though.

quite a good advert from hp that plays on the stereotypical badly played song that EVERYONE knows.

No Stairway

A quote from Wayne’s World, it is a reference to how often amateur guitar players will play butchered versions of the song in music shops and the agony it causes most people to have to listen to. Can also be used as a statement against crappy, loud musicians in music stores.

“I can’t take my little brother to the local music store any more. They have a No Stairway policy, now.”

— from the urban dictionary.

the worst songs to play in a guitar shop

that’s what i’ve chosen to do my ‘top ten’ list on, so i suppose it’s necessary at this point to leave you with a little video to explain this a bit better.

shwing! party on…

TRANSFORM!

an ultimate geek video. transformers combined with mac vs. pc arguments and all in time for me to blog about for this module. not too sure on the design of the transformed laptops though, bit too ‘i, robot’ than actual transformers. ya dig? epic nether-the-less. it left me wanting more and it felt like that it could be just a trailer to a longer piece, something i actually really want to know the outcome of. (macs ftw).

created using after effects and 3ds max. link (warning, site takes a bitch-long time to load).
